What Exactly Makes a Recipe Ayurvedic?

Eating Ayurvedically means incorporating a number of things.

  • Your Prakriti (the constitution you were born with)
  • Your Vikriti (where you are at the moment including any imbalances)
  • Avoiding faulty food combinations
  • Trying to include all 6 tastes (sweet, sour, salty, spicy, bitter and astringent) in every meal

This can seem pretty overwhelming when you start. So the recipes I have given here are Tridoshic meaning they won't aggravate any of the 3 doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) either because the individual ingredients are not aggravating or because the combination of ingredients creates balance. These recipes also don't combine foods that are best eaten separately. There are a number of these "faulty combos". The most common ones are:

  • Fruit and Dairy
  • Meat and Dairy
  • Fish and Dairy

Eating these combinations will affect the digestion and cause Ama (toxins) to form in the body.

Even though the recipes above are designed to be suitable for everyone, we are all unique and an important aspect of Ayurveda is being aware of the effect of anything we put into our own bodies.
