Sound Baths

Sound Baths have suddenly become really popular and understandably as the power of sound is amazing! I have been running sound baths combined with Yoga Nidra as well as at the end of my 3 hour Yin and Yoga Nidra workshops in Reigate, Surrey for the last few years. It wasn’t something I’d planned to do but seemed to come about through a natural transition… as the best things in life often do.

What is a Sound Bath?

The words “sound bath” can conjure up a strange mental image if you have never experienced one before. I’ve certainly had some very puzzled yoga clients of mine asking what exactly a sound bath involves.

When you attend a sound bath, you are bathed in sound. Most commonly, you will be lying comfortably on the floor with blankets and whatever else you need to be comfortable. There is absolutely no water involved!

Sound baths can be given with different instruments, including chimes and bells but most commonly they involve one or more gongs or bowls. The bowls will either be crystal bowls or Tibetan Singing Bowls, which are made out of metal.

My sound baths use Tibetan Singing Bowls. I personally find these to have a more soothing sound than the crystal bowls or gongs which can be a little too intense for some people.

What to Expect

Before the Sound Bath begins, my number one priority is to ensure every one’s comfort. Most commonly people lie on the floor during a sound bath. However, this isn’t a necessity so there is no need to miss out because you are unable to come down to the floor. Sitting comfortably on a chair is absolutely fine.

Even for those able to get down to the floor, there may be modifications required to remain comfortable for the duration of the sound bath so I always take the time to ensure everyone has everything that they need.

Once everyone is settled, I will give a short introduction. My regular sound baths are combined with Yoga Nidra so I explain what will happen before beginning. And that is it - all that is left for you to do is relax and allow the sound of the bowls to wash over you.

At the end, I slowly guide you out and do some grounding techniques to ensure you are ready to face the outside world. There is no rush to leave and I’m always around for a chat at the end.
